To say there is ‘real diversity” on the runway is like saying plus size super models rule the catwalk. Sadly diversity on the runway or in the pages of mainstream magazines usually takes the form of tokenism . One “diverse” model  is strategically used so that the diversity box can be checked. Enter Adama Paris, the founder of International Black Fashion Week. 11 years ago she created Dakar Fashion Week in Senegal and has since launched Black Fashion Week in Prague and Paris. On May 16th ,2013  she launched Canada’s first Black Fashion Week Montreal. Next year she hopes to take Black Fashion Week to the United States and Brazil. Paris says Black Fashion Week showcases designers and models who get overlooked in mainstream fashion. The show was conceived because of Adama’s frustration with international fashion shows and she wanted to increase opportunities for diverse voices .  Black Fashion Week and other similar fashion events like this continue the dialogue and poses the question where is the representation? How are “diverse” models represented? And who is allowed to profit from “ ethnic” fashion ?

How do you feel about Black Fashion Week? Do you think it’s necessary?

Your style should not be defined by your size!
