It’s International No Diet Day party people! Slim fast shakes, waist trainers, obsessive calorie-counting, and clothing that’s been sitting in the back of your closet that doesn’t fit with tags still on BE GONE! But seriously this is a day we should all celebrate regardless of our size. It’s a day where we all can stand up against the diet demons that try to suggest the myth that weight is mutable — something that we can inherently change—that it’s a simple ‘state of mind’ as to whether someone is fat or skinny.   It’s a day when we can focus on who we are as whole people rather than exclusively focusing on the aesthetics. Now don’t get us wrong it’s not a crime to invest in ones aesthetics BUT when looks become the center of how someone defines themselves exclusively that’s when we’ve got some self-reflecting to do!

So…

If you’re in Toronto come on out and spit at the diet demons with us at our FATshionraiser: Fat is a Feminist Issue taking place at the519 Community Centre (519 Church Street). Bring your fabulous selves, your friends, bring along some gently used clothing size 12+ to donate to the519s Newcomer Settlement Program and don’t forget to enjoy yourself. You might also want to wear your dancing shoes as we’ve got the eclectic sounds of DJ MAMA KNOWS playing all evening. If you haven’t visited our Facebook event page (we’re you been! Just kiddin’) then click here for more details.

We checked in with one of our fabulous performers IVORY to find out why International No Diet Day is so important to her and here’s what she had to say:

“International No Diet Day is meant to dispel the negativity surrounding women’s bodies and the myriad of stereotypes, labels and boxes we are forced to try to fit into every day. Personally, I find this day is VITAL as a plus sized women – it’s time we stopped focusing on what our bodies look like and start focusing on how they feel – size and shape should no longer be talking points, we should be focusing instead on healthy lifestyles and healthy bodies at any age and size. Our bodies are our temples and it’s time we stopped trying to whittle them down and started building them up!” Ivory.

Ivory is a Toronto based jazz singer, model, entertainer and body activist. Ivory will be performing again on May 30th at the Pilot Tavern, 22 Cumberland St, Toronto. Her work can be found online at PureIvory.ca and on twitter and Instagram at @pureivorydotca
