What a night we had! BCCA 2015 recap here
4th Annual Body Confidence Canada Awards (BCCAs) will take place on October 6th, 2016
Nominations open on March 8th, 2016
Body Confidence Canada Awards (BCCAs) acknowledges Canada-based recipients actively fighting against stereotypes, judgements, policies, and discrimination that attempt to label and discredit marginalized bodies.
Though we are not affiliated, we were so incredibly inspired by the United Kingdom’s Campaign for Body Confidence (2009) and their inaugural UK Body Confidence Awards (2012) that we decided it was high time to bring this gem to Canada!
Previous BCCA’s have taken place on September 9 International Day of Beauty. International Day of Beauty was created by the International Committee of Aesthetics and Cosmetology (CIDESCO) and was adopted by the World Congress in 1995.
What better day to celebrate body confidence, fat bodies, curvy bodies, racialized, LGBT, differently able-bodies in the arts, film, fashion, television, social media, business, politics, education, health, community empowerment & activism especially when these bodies have been historically and contemporarily seen as outside the ‘standard’ of a ‘good body.’ We look forward to sharing this wonderful occasion with you!

1st Annual Body Confidence Canada Awards | A Toast to Curves| September 9, 2013
Sept 9, 2013 – Lights Camera Curves! Curves Making Herstory during TIFF Season
We hope you’ve had a spellbinding time party-hopping, film watching and stargazing during the 38th Toronto International Film Festival (Sept 5- Sept 15, 2013). Nowhere does film season better than our Toronto! Not only have some of the world’s most outstanding actors and actresses descended upon our city but TIFF season is certainly a heightened time of aesthetic scrutiny where the unabashed opinions of the most fierce style, fashion and beauty pundits rule as both judge and jury. If only TIFF was just about movie watching…but let’s face it the season is also a hotbed for red-carpet stalking, ‘thin is in’ celebrity-watching, anti-aging professing body policing too.
Fat, curves, plus size, “voluptuousity” whatever politically correct “it” euphemism isn’t center stage during TIFF but this year we had a hand in changing that little pesky fact. Although, we must mention three films screened during TIFF13 that tackle weight issues: Fat, Paradise (Paraiso) and Paradise: Hope. The films are a positive step forward in that they represent fat people talking about their own lives (including men!), being “represented” and counted. However, very predictably, the films follow a similar mainstream trajectory of fat being a negative experience one fraught with health complications, lost loved ones and battles with self esteem and food amongst other usual suspects.
We created and hosted A Toast to Curves: Celebrating Size in Film, Fashion & Television on September 9 Int’l Day of Beauty. The first event ever to take place during “TIFF season” to openly celebrate and acknowledge the diverse beauty, talent, sensuality and power of plus (oops…there goes another euphemism — gosh they’re so pervasive) beyond that of the “norm” (read: straight sizes!). The event which took place inside the illustrious Panorama set atop the 51st floor of the Manulife Centre was home to yet another one of our firsts for our city, our country at that — The Body Confidence Canada Awards (also referred to as The Body Confidence Awards Canada) took place during A Toast to Curves.
Though we are not affiliated, we were so incredibly inspired by the United Kingdom’s Campaign for Body Confidence (2009) and their inaugural UK Body Confidence Awards (2012) that we decided it was high time to bring this gem to Canada! Now this is the kind of ‘pandemic’ we need every country catching on to ~ not the ever popular war on fat = poor health and negative confidence messaging we are inundated with.
On September 9 for our inaugural Body Confidence Canada Awards we recognized Glenora Joseph, founder & creator of Canada’s first Miss Canada Plus Pageant; Georgia Greenwood, founder & creator of the International Fuller Woman Expo; Angell Kasparian, editor-in-chief and publisher of Canada’s first print plus fashion magazine GRAND Magazine (which isn’t online but we’ve got some hard copies!); Tabby Johnson, world renowned singer, actress, American Music Award winner, ACTRA National Board Director, child & youth advocate and chair of ACTRA’s women’s committee and last but certainly not least the incomparable Liis Windischmann, top model and a director at the Ben Barry Agency Inc. We know you’re dying to learn more about these iconic women who have been leaders in the size diversity acceptance movement for years…decades well before plus fashion blogging became a craze or tweeting became the raison d’être.
Oh…the suspense…lol. Stay tuned for future Fat in the City posts profiling these amazing women so you too can learn how they toast curves and help inspire body confidence for countless women and girls. We’ve got to recognize our histories if we sincerely want to participate in the creation of our future. And for those of you who didn’t know… September 9 International Day of Beauty was created by the International Committee of Aesthetics and Cosmetology (CIDESCO) and was adopted by the World Congress in 1995. What better day to celebrate body confidence, fat bodies, curvy bodies in film, fashion, television and in community empowerment!
